Polish Lowland Sheepdog, or as is affectionately called the PON, short for Polski Owczarek Nizinny -
Polski translates to Polish and is pronounced pol' skee, Owczarek translates to Sheepdog - the w sounds like a v and cz has a ch sound, and is pronounced ahv cha' rek, Nizinny translates to Lowland and is pronounced ni gi' nee.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) standard describes them as "Medium size, cobby, strong and muscular, with a long thick coat and hanging hair that covers the eyes. His herding and working ability are due to an intense desire to please and a compatible nature.
He is lively but selfÂcontrolled, clever and perceptive, and well known for an excellent memory".
In Poland, the breed has been featured on stamps.
